How to conduct research on computer science education
I will give an overview of research in computer science education. I will explain the importance of this research, what it involves, challenges that researchers may face, and give examples of different styles of research in computer science education.
Experience sharing on developing programming language related courses
In this session I can talk about experiences with different pedagogies we are using in our Faculty including active learning, Peer Instruction, Productive Failure, and self-determined learning with tactile technologies. I can show examples of our new teaching spaces. I can also talk about challenges that we face with plagiarism.
Computing Education Theories: What are they and how are they used
In order to mature as a research field, computing education research (CER) seeks to build a better theoretical understanding of how students learn computing concepts and processes. Progress in this area depends on the development of computing-specific theories of learning to complement the general theoretical understanding of learning processes. The CER literature in three key computing education research publication venues (ICER, ACM Transactions of Computing Education, and Computer Science Education) was analysed for the period 2005--2015. Sixty-five new theoretical constructs of learning computing were identified and the research approaches used in formulating these constructs were determined. The novel theoretical constructs were in areas such as learning/understanding, learning behaviour/strategies, study choice/orientation, and performance/progression/retention. The most common research methods used to devise new constructs included grounded theory, phenomenography, and various statistical models. A further analysis of how a number of these constructs have been used in subsequent research provides an illustration of how theoretical constructs can guide and enrich further research.
