In my dissertation, I coined the term “communitism.” This is a combination of the words “community” and “activism.” It means that Native American authors demonstrate a proactive commitment to community. Native tribes are social units. They are communal. So Native Americans think of themselves not as individuals but as members of the community. They can say, “I am We.” I elaborated on the concept in my book That the People Might Live: Native American Literatures and Native American Community in 1997. In this lectures, I will explain my concept of communitism in terms of contemporary Native literature.
